International Hire - Payroll Information

An IER must be approved before the payroll process can be initiated. Please visit the International Hires and Placements page for information.

  • GW is the Employer of Record
  • The University is registered in the following countries
    • ADP International
      • United Kingdom
      • Spain
      • Portugal
    • Gestion Global
      • Chile
  • Employment Contracts are required and differ by country.  Sample contracts are available from OGC.
    • In Spain, the employee must register in country 3 days prior to the first day of employment
    • In the UK, employees are required to participate in the pension scheme
    • Severance is often required for both voluntary and involuntary terminations
  • No additional cost to the departments
    • Wages charged back to department
    • Fringe rate manually recorded
  • Benefits and taxes are country specific
    • Time off and leave dictated by local customs and laws
    • Taxes cover socialized healthcare and retirement
    • Employees cannot participate in GW provided benefits including the 403b
  •  Paid in local currency and subject to exchange rates
  • GW is NOT an established Employer

    • Australia

  • Each additional country requires a separate SOW with Atlas.  Please allow ample time for the contracting process.
  • Employment Contracts are required and differ by country
    • After the IER is fully approved, fill out the Atlas Request for Payroll form to start the process to hire through Atlas.  The employment contract should be signed by the employee 30 days prior to hire date.
    • Minimum employment term: 3-5 months 
    • Not all countries allow fixed term contracts such as paying by semester
    • Atlas assumes risk – employment law, taxes, benefits, etc.
    • Contract is between employee and Atlas
    • Country specific requirements such as physicals
  • Costs are country dependent
    • Onboarding and offboarding fee per employee $625
    • Refundable deposit equal to one month’s gross pay plus employer liability
    • 1st employee in country $1,000 per month ($625 Payroll Fee plus $375 in country fee)
    • Each additional employee in country $625 per month
    • Employer liability 12.35%-55.00% of gross wages (country dependent)
    • Currency exchange rate 1.5%-3.5% of gross cost (country dependent)
    • Atlas will provide Visa and other immigration services for a fee
