Employee Tips for Teleworking

Caring for Yourself

  • Close the laptop. Work in a space within your home that will present limited interruptions, and try to leave that space when you are finished working, to introduce a bit of a boundary between your workspace and your life.
  • Schedule a walk break or lunch break. Consider taking a moment or two throughout your day to go for a quick walk or to stretch your legs.

Caring for Others

  • Assume positive intent. If your colleague is taking a long time to reply to an email, assume that they may be juggling more than you know. It can be difficult to assess this when working in different locations.
  • “Watercooler” chats are still important. It’s important to ensure that we are still taking the time to connect with our colleagues outside of work. Invite other colleagues to quick chats where you can connect with them when possible.

Clarifying Expectations

  • Speaking with your manager. Your role may depend on you being available and reachable during specific hours throughout the day. Ensure that you are aligned with your manager on what those hours are, and what your specific responsibilities are.
  • Creating goals during remote work. We encourage all employees to create SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound). Work with your manager to determine what the priorities are, and how you can reasonably fulfill them. It’s okay if they change, but speaking with your manager will clarify what is expected of each of you.
  • Scheduling follow-ups. Occasionally, we may have a phone call or be part of an email chain that we may feel went poorly. With virtual work, it can be difficult to determine what someone’s intentions are. Schedule follow-up phone calls and debriefs as needed, to speak effectively and with care.
