Health & Wellness
The George Washington University is committed to offering you a comprehensive benefits package at a competitive cost. We believe that one size may not fit all, so as an employee of GW, you have the opportunity to choose from a variety of programs that allow you, and your family to determine the "best fit."
In today’s world, it’s more important than ever to be in control of your health care choices. With two different medical plan options offered through United Healthcare (UHC), you choose what is best for you and your family. Each of the plans includes prescription drug coverage through CVS Caremark.
You are eligible to choose from three dental plans (high PPO, low PPO, DMO) offered through Aetna. The GW dental plans are stand-alone, so you can enroll in dental coverage whether or not you have medical coverage through GW.
We offer both a basic and enhanced stand-alone vision plan through UnitedHealthcare which provides coverage for lens, contacts, frames and more. GW health plan participants also receive discounted vision benefits.
You have the opportunity to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible health care or dependent day care expenses in flexible spending accounts.
We provide basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance for all benefit eligible faculty and staff. You also have the opportunity to purchase additional coverage for yourself, spouse, same and opposite sex domestic partner or children.
Disability insurance provides you income replacement if you are unable to work due to a disability for a defined period of time. During your first two years of service, you are eligible to participate in GW’s voluntary short term disability plan. After two years, FT staff are eligible for the GW-paid short term disability plan, which covers between 50% and 100% of your income, based on your years of service. GW also provides long term disability for all FT faculty and staff at no cost.
You, your dependents, and your household members are eligible to use the services provided by GW’s Faculty/Employee Assistance Program. This service offers resources and help, free counseling, and referrals.
Health Advocate is a special benefit paid by GW that can help you and your family members personally resolve your healthcare and insurance issues, promptly and reliably, by cutting through the barriers that often create frustration and problems.
GW offers a wide range of wellness programs that promote healthy living, friendly competition, and teamwork among GW staff and faculty. Programs include smoking cessation programs, walking challenges, flu vaccinations, GW’s Healthy Pregnancy Program, a faculty and staff summer softball league, and much more.
